They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Maurizio Gucci found out this the hard way when his life was cut short in 1995 when his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggian, hired a hitman to kill her ex-husband in revenge for cheating. Maurizio Gucci was the grandson of Guccio Gucci, founder of the Italian fashion company and was the last member of the family to head the Gucci business. In 1993, Maurizio sold his holding for $170m to a Bahrain-based investment company ending the relationship between the Gucci brand and its founding family.
Reggiani was given a 26-year sentence for the murder, the crime earning her the nickname The Black Widow. The trial was one of Italy’s most followed court cases with Reggiani turning up to court in designer clothes and jewellery each day. Well-known for her luxury lifestyle, she once said: ‘I’d rather cry in a Rolls than be happy on a bicycle.’
To date, she has served her sentence in a Milanese prison. However, the ‘Black Widow’ is eligible for release owing to her good behaviour during the sixteen years of her sentence.
In 2011, Reggiani was offered parole but told the board at San Vittore jail: ‘No thanks as it would mean getting a job and I have never worked a day in my life.’ However, it looks like the 62 year old has had a change in heart . A Milan judge is considering her lawyer’s request for the term to be suspended, so that she can work as a consultant for Italian costume jewellery and accessories label Bozart. We look forward to her designs – a spider themed range perhaps?
