Kanye West has outdone even himself in stupid moves. The fame hungry rapper turned fashion designer turned reality TV ego maniac has released a line of merchandise for his ‘Yeezus’ tour which takes a little too much inspiration from Metallica. His ‘Yeezus’ t-shirts, pictured below will look a little familiar to all you thrash metal fans out there.
Has Lars caught wind of this? We can only guess not since we haven’t heard of any lawsuits filed yet .We’re pretty sure Metallica, one of the world’s most litigious bands (even if that story about attempting to trademark the E chord turned out to be false), would have pounced straight on Mr West if they knew. Now, we know, there is nothing inherently illegal about the Kanye t-shirts. In order to prove trademark infringement they would need to show a ‘likelihood of confusion’. Will Metallica fans be duped into thinking ‘Yeezus’ is the name of a new Metallica song and unwittingly purchase Kanye West t-shirts? We think it’s a possibility and given Metallica’s love of litigation, one they would love to argue! The t-shirts aren’t only on sale at Kanye concerts but at a ‘Yeezus’ specific shop opened in Los Angeles and they will also reportedly be available at mall retailer PacSun in the coming weeks.
Kanye claims that the t-shirts where designed by himself (he’s a fashion designer dontchaknow), and include original artwork by artist Wes Lang. Maybe he’s developed a love for 80′s thrash metal – he was pictured front row at a fashion show not so long ago wearing a Metallica t-shirt. But more than likely Kanye is just looking to cause more controversy and extend the warranty on his 15 minutes. We must be close to Kardashian saturation point and Kanye needs something to keep himself in the papers! If only Metallica weren’t so busy watching repeats of ‘Through the Never’ wondering ‘what on earth where we thinking!?’ they’d have their lawyers all over this one.
