A Vancouver-based makeup artist is filing a lawsuit against US rapper Lil’Kim for stealing her photograph and using it to promote her single “Dead Gal Walking”. Samantha Ravndahl had posted a makeup tutorial on Reddit.com back in October 2012, showing viewers how to achieve what’s described as a ‘pop-art zombie’ look. A few weeks later, Ravndahl claims that she discovered the image posted to Lil’Kim’s Instagram page with the copyright symbol in the left hand corner next to Lil Kim’s name.
“She didn’t credit me or anything. I thought it was kind of weird and looked into it more. I found all these other places she had been using this image as promotional album art for her song,” Ravndahl told the Vancouver Globe and Mail.
Lil’ Kim (real name, Kimberly Denise Jones) apparently reached out to the makeup artist via her manager and tried to convince her that it was great publicity for her! There was no offer of any compensation. She was told that Kim’s team ‘worked slowly’. While ‘working slowly’, the team continued to use the image to promote the ‘Lil’ Kim’ single “Dead Gal Walking”.
A cease and desist letter was sent by Ravndahl’s attorneys in November alleging copyright infringement, misappropriation of likeness, misattribution and violation of state and federal law.
We suspect Kim’s team won’t work so slowly when the lawsuit is filed and that a handsome settlement will be reached long before this one hits the courts!
