Rihanna is causing more controversy on her sojourn through the Middle East. Although the 25 year old singer swapped her usual leather hotpants and thigh boots (she’s a classy lady) for a black jumpsuit topped with a black hijab, she managed to get thrown out of a Mosque for staging a photoshoot.
The fashion shoot, shot by by Steven Gomillion and Dennis Leupold in front of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, was called to a halt when Rihanna and her crew were asked to leave. The Mosque released the following statement
“The Centre strives to ensure that visitors enter the mosque in a decent fashion, and refrain from behaving in any way that is inconsistent with the sanctity of this religious place. In the event of behaviour that violates the moral codes of access to the mosque, or other visit regulations – such as taking inappropriate pictures, posing in ways that are improper in the context of sacred place, talking loudly, or eating – the violators are directed in a polite manner that reflects the civilisational and tolerant attributes of Islam. Usually, the visitors are appreciative of that.”
The public reaction to the incident was played out via instagram, with the majority of fans unimpressed with her behaviour. While some praised her for wearing the hijab, other accused her of wearing it as a fashion accessory rather than as a sign of respect. Her decision to stage a fashion shoot at a place of worship was also called into question.
“Next time when you’ll visit our country respect our religion and our rules, This is not acceptable at all” tweeted one irate individual.
“This completely defeats the purpose of wearing a hijab. It’s not a fashion accessory,” said another.
What do you think? Has the singer gone too far this time?
