No stranger to activism or, indeed, controversy, Vivienne Westwood used her Spring/Summer 2015 fashion show as a platform to urge a Yes vote in the Scottish Independence election. This Thursday, Scotland will vote on whether to sever its ties with England or remain part of the United Kingdom and Westwood was not shy about airing her views.
Models took to the runway sporting Thatcheresque pinstriped suits with exaggerated shoulders adorned with ’Yes’ badges on their lapels. The collection grew gradually more feminine but the ‘Yes’ buttons remained consistent throughout the show
And in case there was any doubt of where she stood, Westwood announced after the show
“I hate England” and released the following press release;
“ In England there is hardly any democracy left. The government does what it wants. That which should belong to people – it gives it all to business, e.g. they’re prepared to poison our water so that businesses can frack. The most important thing I have to say is that after 300 years, the capitalist system is now at an end. It’s over. Yet the English government – all main parties – want to drag us down with it. We want Scotland to break the deadlock and march into the future. We English have to fight our government. You, Scotland, can have the government you want.”
Although the ‘Yes’ campaign has gained momentum in recent weeks, varying polls still show the ‘No’ campaign with a slight lead (51%). Will Queen Viv help swing it for the ‘Yes’ campaign?
